Navigating challenging neighbours in construction projects
We face many challenges in our Construction business, but none as sensitive as dealing with the neighbours…
The most common challenges are complaints of noise, disputes over the property boundaries, parking and access issues (especially when it comes to delivering materials to the site), perceived disruption to daily life and unfounded accusations or hostility.
Through my experience, I have found that the very best way to mitigate any potential problems with the neighbours are the following:
- Pre-Construction Meetings: Engage with neighbours before starting the project to address concerns and establish open communication.
- Regular Updates: Provide schedules, noise alerts, and progress reports to keep neighbours informed.
- Designated Point of Contact: Appoint a single contact person for neighbours concerns, ensuring prompt resolution.
- Noise Mitigation: Implement noise-reducing measures, such as scheduling noisy work during less disruptive hours.
- Visual Barriers: Install fencing or screening to minimise visual disruption.
- Documentation: Keep records of interactions, agreements, and incidents for future reference.
- Empathy and Understanding: Show genuine concern for neighbors’ quality of life and well-being.
And that generally gets us through the project without too much trouble from the neighbours!
Until next time...
Best regards
